A Call for a Proper Remake or Remaster of Dragon Quest IX

A Call for a Proper Remake or Remaster of Dragon Quest IX

The Case for a Dragon Quest IX Remake

Among the celebrated titles within the Dragon Quest franchise, Dragon Quest IX stands out as a unique entry, primarily due to its innovative online features. Unlike its counterparts, excluding Dragon Quest X, this title is not currently available on any modern gaming platforms, making a remake long overdue. A full reimagining, akin to the recent Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake, could reignite interest in this classic.

A Personal Journey with Dragon Quest IX

Interestingly, Dragon Quest IX was my inaugural experience with the series. While it doesn’t hold a special place in my heart and remains my least favorite compared to titles such as III, VII, VIII, X, and XI, it did offer a unique charm, notably for those who experienced it on the Nintendo DS.

Character Customization and Multiplayer Features

One of the flagship features of Dragon Quest IX is its expansive character customization, allowing players to create characters from the ground up. This encourages deeper engagement compared to merely customizing companions. Additionally, the game placed strong emphasis on multiplayer, introducing a charmingly unique system.

Through this multiplayer setup, players could borrow each other’s characters to embark on adventures, creating a collaborative journey across a beautifully crafted world. This was particularly exhilarating for a turn-based JRPG at that time, offering a sense of novelty and excitement.

Paving the Way for Dragon Quest X

In many ways, Dragon Quest IX can be seen as a precursor to Dragon Quest X, a title that boldly ventured into the MMO realm. Unfortunately, as it stands, Dragon Quest X remains exclusive to Japan, hindering its reach to Western audiences.

Imagine the Possibilities of a Remake

A potential remake or remaster of Dragon Quest IX would be an exciting prospect, especially if infused with the stunning HD-2D art style. This transformation could breathe new life into the game, allowing players to create enchanting angelic characters while either traversing the world with companions or enjoying a traditional solo adventure.

Expanding the Audience

The release of a revamped version for multiple platforms, including PlayStation and PC, alongside Nintendo systems, could cultivate a vibrant online community. Implementing crossplay features would not only foster lasting connections among players but also extend the game’s life well beyond its original DS limitations.

Despite its potential, the game’s combat mechanics and narrative left much to be desired. Although the combat felt elementary and the storyline lacked depth, a remake could enhance these aspects. The introduction of the captivating HD-2D graphics combined with streamlined battle mechanics could render gameplay more engaging, attracting both new players and returning fans.

The Urgent Need for a Modern Adaptation

Ultimately, the absence of Dragon Quest IX from current gaming platforms highlights the urgency for a remaster or remake. No other titles in the series share this plight, aside from VII, which at least enjoys a mobile version in Japan and a worldwide 3DS release. Dragon Quest IX, however, remains confined to the Nintendo DS and lacks any modern incarnation.

The Final Call for Remaking Dragon Quest IX

Given its online-centric design, there is a risk that Dragon Quest IX may be overshadowed and forgotten in the series. However, revisiting this title for a modern remake could be a worthwhile endeavor, especially considering the commercial success of the Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake. The potential resurgence and renewed interest in its multiplayer mechanics could enrich the JRPG landscape.

As it stands, Dragon Quest IX remains solely available on the Nintendo DS, whereas titles like Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake are thriving on platforms such as Nintendo Switch, PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC.

Here’s hoping for a future where fans can enjoy a revitalized Dragon Quest IX, inviting more players to explore its innovative multiplayer focus and creative character customization.
