While it may seem harsh, not every video game announcement garners enthusiasm or high hopes. Some projects, instead, evoke a nagging sensation that something is amiss. This feeling can stem from various factors such as insufficient marketing, troubled development processes, inconsistent creative directions, poor timing, or lackluster trailers. Consequently, these games often divide community opinions, carrying the looming stigma of potential failure before they even launch.
Today, I’ve taken a rather pessimistic view and compiled a list of titles that currently appear to be at a disadvantage, potentially on the path to flop as they approach market release. Of course, there’s always the possibility of a miraculous turnaround when these games are finally launched. However, the factors outlined lead me to choose the following examples.
9 Lost Soul Aside
When Even the Title is a Bad Sign

With nearly a decade of development under its belt, Lost Soul Aside raises eyebrows, especially given the notable changes presented in its various trailers. On paper, it looks promising as an ambitious ARPG featuring dynamic weapon combos and grand boss battles. However, rumors suggest issues behind the scenes are surfacing. A full development phase didn’t kick off until around 2021, indicating significant content may have been cut. Additionally, fans have expressed dissatisfaction with the visuals and gameplay shown in recent trailers, signaling potential red flags.
8 The Sinking City 2
Better Swim Not To Sink

The first installment of The Sinking City had a troubled launch marred by legal battles, resulting in a temporary removal from digital platforms. Though it found a niche audience among cosmic horror fans, player expectations for the sequel are rather low. Many anticipate a similar experience, including the original’s flaws. Adding to the uncertainty is the fact that a different studio, unrelated to the original development, is now steering the sequel, leaving die-hard fans apprehensive about its future.
7 Borderlands 4
Claptrap, Do Something

The excitement around Borderlands 4 seems to be faltering since the recent live-action film’s mixed reception, and fans are not happy about proposed price hikes, including an $80 tag. Additionally, its scheduled October release date clashes with a plethora of other highly-anticipated AAA titles like Ghost of Yōtei and Ninja Gaiden 4. Unless Gearbox delivers exceptional innovation, Borderlands 4 risks being overshadowed by its competitors.
6 Moonlighter 2: The Endless Vault
Not Much To Be Seen

Regrettably, Moonlighter 2: The Endless Vault seems unlikely to replicate the success of its predecessor due to insufficient promotion and a perceived lack of content. Preview impressions have been disappointing, citing minimal new material despite the upgrade to 3D graphics. Having participated in a hands-on event, I can attest that the game felt largely unchanged from the original. Furthermore, its marketing efforts have failed to engage the indie community, leaving many unaware of its upcoming release in 2025. This timing places it in direct competition with other major sequels.
5 Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time
Sands of A LOT of Time

Initially unveiled five years ago, the remake of Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time suffered overwhelming criticism for its visual shortcomings, prompting delays and even a studio transition—usually a troubling sign. While intended as a modern reinvention of the beloved 2003 classic, this game has transitioned through numerous creative directions, risking becoming a patchwork version of the original. Given the franchise’s notable legacy, fans’ expectations for quality are understandably high; failing to meet these standards could result in significant backlash.
4 Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater
SNAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAKE

The prospect of Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater raises concerns among fans, primarily because it aims to recreate a classic without its original creator, Hideo Kojima. Given the disappointing outcomes of past Kojima-free installments, particularly Metal Gear Survive, skepticism is warranted. Fans hope this remake does not turn into a soulless reproduction devoid of originality, stressing the importance of lessons learned from previous mistakes.
3 Marathon
Concord Feelings, Anyone?

With the announcement of Marathon by Bungie, reactions have been mixed. While some express enthusiasm for the gunplay and graphics, others question its potential to rival established extraction shooters like Escape from Tarkov and Hunt: Showdown. Additionally, the decision to exclude a solo mode hinders its appeal, especially given the rich lore that could be more deeply explored. This combination of factors makes it difficult to envision its success against competition.
2 Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines 2
A Bite That May Hurt More Than It Should

It’s disheartening to report on Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines 2, a project that has lingered in production limbo since its announcement in 2019. It has undergone a background reboot, faced numerous delays, and even prompted pre-sale refunds. Such extensive upheaval inevitably raises concerns about the stability and quality of the final product, particularly for a franchise known for its rich lore and intricate gameplay. Nonetheless, there’s still a faint glimmer of hope for fans.
1 Beyond Good and Evil 2
Hoping It Is Just Beyond Good

It’s hard to believe we’ve been anticipating Beyond Good and Evil 2 for 16 years since its original announcement in 2008. The sporadic updates—most notably a “re-reveal” in 2017—have only fueled skepticism as players joke that a “re-re-reveal”is on the horizon. Even if the game does eventually see the light of day, the extensive development struggles are likely to be reflected in the final product.
