Nintendo’s talented team behind phenomenal titles like Super Mario Odyssey and Donkey Kong Bananza has captivated my gaming experience. After purchasing a Switch primarily for Odyssey and later a Switch 2 for Bananza, I found immense joy in both adventures.
What distinguishes these games is their open-world structure, characterized by fluid and evolving gameplay as opposed to the traditional stage-based models seen in earlier titles. While Donkey Kong 64 introduced a similar concept, it lacks the immersive fun offered by Odyssey. I believe this innovative gameplay framework could revitalize various beloved franchises within Nintendo’s impressive roster.
This revitalization could shine a spotlight on some of Nintendo’s quieter characters. Many have not starred in their own games for years, with a significant portion of the Super Smash Bros. lineup waiting for new adventures.
9 Ice Climbers
Literally Their Profession
While I’m not the most ardent fan of the Ice Climbers, Popo and Nana, their potential deserves attention. Introduced in Super Smash Bros. Melee, they have never quite gained significant popularity. Yet, if they’re worthy of a spot in Smash, surely, a new game showcasing them is overdue.
The mobility aspects seen in Super Mario Odyssey align perfectly with the Ice Climbers’ skill set, which largely revolves around climbing and jumping. Their Belay ability, for example, where one climber tosses the other upwards using a rope, could be reimagined for scaling towering mountains throughout a potential game.
From a marketing angle, adopting a co-op model for Popo and Nana’s adventure fits well into Nintendo’s recent trend of cooperative gameplay, making it a thrilling prospect for fans old and new.
8 R. OB
Astro Bot Did It
R. O.B., or the Robotic Operating Buddy, emerged as a nostalgic figure in gaming since being unveiled as a secret character in Mario Kart DS. Rather than representing a game character, he symbolizes Nintendo’s hardware legacy.
Despite not being as iconic as Mario, R. O.B.is ripe for a revival in an Odyssey-style game. Drawing inspiration from his unique gameplay abilities in Super Smash Bros., there’s plenty of room for creativity—flying jets, spinning attacks, and laser projectiles could all enhance traversal and combat mechanics.
A game could also provide a playful nod to Nintendo’s hardware history, as R. O.B.seeks to repair classic consoles, perhaps culminating in a dramatic showdown with a rogue robot villain.
7 A Humanoid Pokémon
With A Few Other ‘Mons In Tow
The expansive Pokémon franchise offers more than just RPG gameplay; it has potential for diverse gaming experiences across genres. A grand, exploratory adventure featuring various Pokémon would be a fantastic avenue to explore.
Imagine a platformer set in the Mystery Dungeon universe, featuring Pokémon that can freely communicate with one another. A neutral, humanoid Pokémon, like Lucario or Cinderace, could lead a team of unique characters, utilizing their strengths to navigate obstacles—perhaps switching to Pikachu for tight spots or Lapras for aquatic sections.
6 Falco
Fox Had His Turn Already
While Fox McCloud has rightfully graced the spotlight with his own adventures, it might be time for a different Star Fox character to shine: Falco. His character is well-equipped for a dynamic platforming experience, showcasing acrobatic skills and aerial maneuvers.
Though I’m uncertain about Falco’s flight capabilities, his agility and potential for cool jumps would translate well into gameplay. Imagine equipping him with an Arwing-themed jetpack for added fun and integrating a full combat arsenal to counter foes effectively.
5 Inklings
They’ve Got The Mobility And Gear
As we await updates on the anticipated Splatoon Raiders, the potential for an Odyssey-configured world set in Splatoon is tantalizing. The existing mobility mechanics, such as super jumps and wall climbing, could adapt seamlessly into a vast open world filled with exploration and secrets.
4 Pit
One Pair of Wings, Lots of Weapons
Despite his prominence in Kid Icarus: Uprising, Pit has been sidelined in recent Nintendo releases. While his previous adventure successfully integrated diverse weaponry, a new game could completely break away from the constraints of on-rails gameplay.
Players can explore freely, discovering unique abilities through various weapons and crafting an engaging glide system that rewards exploration. Voiced dialogue with favorites like Palutena and Viridi would enhance the narrative experience.
3 Kirby
He’s Halfway There
Although Kirby and the Forgotten Land marked a significant achievement in size and complexity, it remains a linear experience. A reimagined, open-world Kirby adventure could capitalize on his unique movement abilities—transforming environmental elements and enemies to solve puzzles.
Innovative mechanics that promote exploration while maintaining the core essence of Kirby’s powers, combined with an exceptional plot hook, could entice both existing fans and newcomers to this beloved franchise.
2 Bowser
Bowser’s Earned An Adventure
It’s high time Bowser transcended his role as merely the antagonist in Mario’s adventures. The Koopa King possesses great potential for leading his own journeys, showcasing his speed and agility, and using his unique abilities for new challenges.
A Bowser-centric game could depict an intense quest for revenge or treasure where he utilizes fire breath and tactical maneuvers while showcasing his leadership with minions. There’s potential for a heartwarming sidekick dynamic with Bowser Jr., turning villainy into an endearing father-son adventure.
1 Wario
Any Wario Game Would Be Nice, Really
Wario remains a significant player in Nintendo’s roster, yet a new Wario game has been absent for years aside from WarioWare. Once a prominent figure in the Nintendo gaming scene, he’s due for a triumphant return to treasure hunting and whimsical adventures.
A potential title like Super Wario Odyssey could blend elements from his past escapades, showcasing his unique abilities—like transformation and strength—in an engaging treasure-hunting format. It would be delightful to weave in Waluigi for competitive antics, turning their rivalry into a lighthearted subplot.
