6 Incredible Songs Authored by BTS’ RM

RM of BTS is widely recognized for his exceptional songwriting talent, having participated in the creation of more than 187 songs. Tracks such as “Moonchild”and “Wildflower”reveal a reflective, melancholic layer of his artistry, while “Change,”a collaboration with Wale, conveys an optimistic outlook for the future of the BTS leader.

During a Vogue interview on December 23, 2021, RM shared insights into his creative process, stating,

“Previously, I was constrained by numerous rules—thinking, ‘I must do this and that’—and focused too much on showcasing specific techniques. Nowadays, I prioritize conveying a particular emotional texture in a more abstract manner.”

His expansive collaborations include work with TXT, HONNE, Younha, and many others, highlighting his dynamic songwriting skills and versatility.

Released on December 2, 2022, “Wild Flower”is a standout track from RM’s debut solo album, Indigo. Co-written with Mikscod, the song features Crystal Filter vocalist Youjeen, echoing RM’s journey toward self-identity. The lyrics express how the pursuit of fame has blinded him, and he yearns for simplicity, much like an unnamed wildflower.

The lyrics state,

“When everything I bеlieved in grew distant / When all this fame turned into shackles / Please take my desire away from me / No matter what it takes / Oh, let me be myself.”

2) Crying over You

“Crying Over You,”which debuted in 2018, is a chart-topping song by British duo HONNE that showcases the longing for lost love, featuring American singer Bekka. A year later, RM collaborated with HONNE, adding a rap element to the track. His rap lines in English include:

“Now I don’t like a cliché, but I’m reading / From the same book all over again / All different covers, all different colours / They’re never the same but they always / Make me cry at the end.”

3) Change

The conception of “Change”began in 2016 following a proposal for collaboration from American rapper Wale on X (formerly Twitter). In 2017, Wale traveled to South Korea to develop this song that addresses pressing subjects such as political issues, bullying, and mental health. The lyrics convey a sense of hope for a better world despite the chaos.

4) 0X1=Lovesong

RM’s songwriting prowess extends to the K-pop realm, as illustrated by “0X1=Lovesong,”a collaboration with TOMORROW X TOGETHER from their 2021 album, The Chaos Chapter: FREEZE. After weeks of struggling with the song, Big Hit’s CEO, Bang Si Hyuk, handed it over to RM, who willingly stepped in to complete the track.

5) Forever Rain

“Forever Rain,”featured on RM’s mixtape Mono, consists of seven experimental songs and was released on October 23, 2018. This rain-themed track revolves around loneliness, contrasting with RM’s usual rap style. In a heartfelt Naver V Live session, Kim Namjoon expressed,

“I have strong feelings attached to the song. I feel that there can’t be another song that is more like me than this song.”

6) Moonchild

“Moonchild”was recently featured in NASA’s Moon Tunes playlist for its upcoming lunar initiative. This melancholic track, also from the Mono mixtape, narrates the story of a moon child drawing strength from the moon while avoiding the sun.

RM expresses,

“I left, but can never get to leave once / You say you wanna die, but live it much harder / You say you wanna let go but put on another weight / Thinking of not thinking at all is still thinking, you know / Actually this is our destiny, you know.”

Apart from these highlighted tracks, RM has displayed his lyrical abilities in songs like “21st Century Girls,””Reflection,””Timeless,”and others. He also contributed to “Dilemma”by Homme and Gaeko’s “Gajah,”released in 2018. Through these masterpieces, BTS’ RM has established himself as one of today’s foremost songwriters.
