5 Ways to Disable AirPlay on iPhone Easily

Apple has a tightly interwoven ecosystem, and AirPlay is its way of sharing and streaming content from one device to another. If you have an iPhone and an AirPlay-enabled device, you can share any content, including audio, video, photos, and more, from your mobile device and stream it to the latter. You can use AirPlay to stream content from your iPhone to your Mac, Apple TV, or any other display or speaker that supports Apple AirPlay.

If you don’t use AirPlay that often or don’t find it useful at all, the following post should help you disable AirPlay on your iPhone.

How to turn off AirPlay on your iPhone in 5 ways

You can turn off AirPlay on your iPhone in a variety of ways by switching playback back to your iPhone and not the device you’re streaming to.

Method #1: Use the Screen Mirroring option in the Control Center

If you have video playing on an AirPlay-enabled device through your iPhone, or if you’re mirroring your iPhone’s screen to another display, you can disable AirPlay on iPhone using the Control Center. To do this, launch the Control Center on your iPhone:

  • On iPhone X, XS, 11, 12, and 13, swipe down from the top right corner of the screen.
  • On iPhone SE, 8, 7, 6 and older, swipe up from the bottom of the screen.

When the Control Center opens, look for the Screen Mirroring option. If AirPlay is used, screen mirroring will be highlighted. To stop AirPlay, tap this Screen Mirroring tile in Control Center.

In the additional menu that appears, you should see the device that is streaming media. To disable AirPlay, click Stop Mirroring.

Media playback on an AirPlay-enabled device should stop immediately.

Method #2: Using the Control Center Media Player

If you’re streaming audio from your iPhone to an AirPlay device, you can use the media player from your iPhone’s Control Center to disable AirPlay. To do this, launch the Control Center on your iPhone:

  • On iPhone X, XS, 11, 12, and 13, swipe down from the top right corner of the screen.
  • On iPhone SE, 8, 7, 6 and older, swipe up from the bottom of the screen.

When the Control Center opens, you will see a media player in the top right corner. This player will show the title of the song or media along with the artist name. If this media is being streamed via AirPlay, you should see the AirPlay icon glow blue in the top right corner. To stop AirPlay, tap this AirPlay icon inside the media player.

You should see an additional menu showing the device you’re streaming to via AirPlay, selected under Speakers and TVs.

To turn off Airplay, select iPhone from this additional menu so that media only plays on your device.

Method #3: Using the Apple TV app

If you’re using the Apple TV app to stream movies and TV shows, you can turn off AirPlay right in the app. If you’re currently playing something in the Apple TV app on your iPhone on an AirPlay device, the AirPlay icon inside the on-screen playback controls will be highlighted in blue. To disable AirPlay, tap this AirPlay icon in the bottom left corner.

You should now see an additional menu showing the AirPlay device that is currently playing content under Speakers and TVs.

You can disable AirPlay by tapping iPhone in this additional menu.

The content will stop playing on the AirPlay-enabled TV.

If the Apple TV app is set to play via AirPlay by default, you can disable it by first tapping the blue AirPlay icon in the top left corner.

In the additional menu that appears, you should see that the selected AirPlay device is set to automatically play the content you play on your Apple TV on your phone. To disable this, click “Play on iPhone” in this additional menu.

All future content that you play in the Apple TV app on your iPhone will now play on it instead of automatically through AirPlay.

Method #4: Using the Apple Music App

If you are listening to something with the Apple Music app via AirPlay, you can turn it off in the app itself. To do this, open the Apple Music app and go to the playback screen. If AirPlay is active, you should see iPhone ➔ <AirPlay device> below the AirPlay icon at the bottom. To disable AirPlay on Apple Music, tap this AirPlay icon at the bottom.

In the additional menu that appears, you will see that your AirPlay device is selected under Speakers and TVs.

To disable AirPlay, tap iPhone in this menu.

This should disable AirPlay from playing your content from your iPhone to another device.

Method #5: From the iOS Lock Screen

If a media file is playing on your iPhone via AirPlay, you can turn it off from the lock screen on iOS in the same way as in the Control Center. To disable AirPlay, tap the blue AirPlay icon in the upper right corner of the media player window on the lock screen.

In the AirPlay submenu, you will see the AirPlay device you selected earlier in the “Speakers and TVs” list.

Here, click on iPhone to continue playing content on your phone instead of AirPlay.

AirPlay will turn off as soon as you switch to your iPhone.

Frequently asked Questions

How to prevent AirPlay from automatically connecting to your TV

If your family has an AirPlay-enabled TV, Apple allows iPhone users to automatically connect to those TVs whenever they play content on their phones. Since this feature is enabled by default, you may find it difficult to disable AirPlay every time you play something when you are near an AirPlay-enabled TV.

If you want to disable AirPlay and prevent it from automatically connecting to your TV every time you play something, you can set this up in your iPhone’s settings. To do this, open the Settings app on iOS and tap on General.

In the General section, select AirPlay and Handoff.

On the next screen, click “Automatically use AirPlay for TVs”.

Here, select “Never” or “Ask” depending on how you want to use AirPlay with your TV.

That’s all. Now your TV will no longer automatically play content from your iPhone.

Is it possible to disable AirPlay completely?

No. Apple doesn’t offer a way to permanently disable AirPlay. Because AirPlay is a built-in iOS feature and not a dedicated app, you can’t turn it off permanently. You can only turn it off when you use or prevent your iPhone content from playing on other AirPlay devices if you don’t want to use this feature.

Is it possible to disable AirPlay in iOS settings?
