Unsolved Mysteries, Volume 5 premiered on Netflix on October 2, 2024. The third episode of this volume delves into the disturbing reports of animal mutilations that have left ranchers across the globe reeling.

The identity of the perpetrators behind these brutal animal mutilations remains a mystery. Some speculate that alien activity may be at play, while others suggest the involvement of a demonic cult, and there are those who believe in a government covert operation.

In Unsolved Mysteries episode 3, aptly titled Mysterious Mutilations, the complex case of mass animal mutilations is revisited. The episode’s synopsis reads:

“For decades, a wave of cattle mutilations executed with near-surgical precision has plagued the US. Are extraterrestrials behind these gruesome acts?”

5 bone-chilling details about the Mysterious Mutilations in episode 3 of Unsolved Mysteries Volume 5

1) The Heifer was brutally mutilated

According to Mt. Anderson, the owner of the ranch in Grant County, Oregon, a heifer began behaving oddly in early June 2021. Despite trailing the heifer for several miles, it lingered behind.

The following morning, Mt. Anderson returned to find the heifer dead and mutilated on its right side. The animal’s hide was pulled back, the tongue was missing, a precise cut was made behind its shoulders, and the face was skinned.

Describing his shocking experience, Mt. Anderson stated on the show:

“I was taken aback. I’ve never seen anything like that ever… there was no noticeable blood, no sign of a struggle….”

2) Mat Carter was horrified to discover his cow mutilated.

In August 2020, another rancher, Mat Carter, found a dead cow on his southern ranch. The cow had been dismembered; its tongue was gone, its upper lip was severed, and intestines protruded between its legs. There was no indication of a struggle.

After discovering the mutilation, Carter voiced his fears. On Unsolved Mysteries, he recounted:

“When I was sure it was a mutilated cow, I thought, well, it’s pretty close to home now. It’s happened to me, which you never think is going to happen until it does….”

3) The crime scene showed no footprints or signs in the snow.

An episode from Unsolved Mysteries volume 5 revealed that in 2020 a dead bull was found. Although there was blood, the area was entirely devoid of tracks in the snow. Authorities were alerted to inspect the scene but could find no prints. Although it was unlikely to be a predator attack, the lack of evidence raised eyebrows among officials.

4) The assailant removed the reproductive organs of the cow.

Another rancher discovered a cow beneath a Juniper tree in July 2020, which initially looked sick. Upon closer inspection, it was confirmed that the cow’s reproductive tracts and tongue were missing. Deputy Jeremiah Holmes, who investigated the scene, shared:

“…It was eerie. I have never seen a cow with its heat off the ground in a rigor mortis-like state ever….”

5) A cow’s vulva was meticulously severed.

In 2019, Darwin Hodges stumbled across a healthy cow mutilated in his field. The cow’s lips, cheek, and tongue were precisely cut, while the vulva was removed in a perfect circle.

Hodges recounted his discovery on Unsolved Mysteries, saying:

“…straight lines, no jagged, ragged edges. I mean just to a T. I thought, Jesus Christ, what the hell happened? The more you look at it, the more bizarre it becomes….”
