3 times WWE tag team matches were added to the WrestleMania main event
WWE has a rich history of 70 years. It was originally established by Jess McMahon and subsequently managed by Vince McMahon Sr. until it was acquired by his son, Vince McMahon. Today, TKO Holdings Group oversees the promotion, with creative direction being led by Triple H.
The annual event that draws the largest audience for the massive pro wrestling company is WrestleMania. This popular event has been held since 1985 and the 40th edition is set to take place in just a few days.
With a total of 39 WrestleMania events, the WWE Universe has been able to witness 43 headlining superstars, thanks to the introduction of the two-night ‘Mania format in 2020. Despite this, there have only been a few tag team matches featured as the main event.
This article will revisit the tag team matches that were the main events of The Show of Shows. These include a match featuring Hulk Hogan, another with the tag team championship at stake, and one that is scheduled to take place in just a few days.
There have been a total of three instances where WWE tag team matches were included in the main event of WrestleMania.
#3. The Inaugural WrestleMania Featured a Historic Tag Team Main Event
While it is uncommon to see tag team main events at WWE premium live events nowadays, the first-ever Show of Shows began with a bang. The iconic Hulk Hogan was the headliner for WrestleMania I in a tag team match.
At the match, Jimmy “Superfly”Snuka joined forces with The Hulkster and celebrity actor Mr. T, while “Cowboy”Bob Orton and Paul Orndorff were accompanied by “Rowdy”Roddy Piper. The special guest referees for the highly anticipated event were none other than Muhammad Ali and Pat Patterson.
Despite being a WWE main event, the bout was relatively brief, lasting only 13 minutes. The interference of Bob Orton Jr. proved to be unsuccessful and ultimately led to Piper and Orndorff’s defeat. This caused The Hot Rod to lose his temper and leave in a fit of rage. As expected, Hogan celebrated his victory and posed for the fans, a familiar sight for longtime WrestleMania viewers.
#2. The WWE Tag Team Championship was up for grabs in last year’s event
It may come as a surprise to fans that the main event of WrestleMania 1 was the last time a tag team match headlined The Show of Shows until 2023. However, this streak was finally broken 38 years later at WrestleMania 39, when the Tag Titles headlined Night One of The Showcase of the Immortals.
The final match of WrestleMania Saturday featured a highly anticipated showdown for the Undisputed WWE Tag Team Title. The Usos, who had combined the prestigious titles in 2022, entered the ring as the reigning champions and held the record for the promotion’s longest Tag Team Championship reign.
The team they faced that evening consisted of Kevin Owens and Sami Zayn, a pair of long-time friends and adversaries. While they had encountered conflicts in the past, they had recently joined forces on The Road to WrestleMania 39. Both wrestlers had faced numerous challenges against The Bloodline, and neither had yet achieved tag team championship success in the company.
The two teams engaged in a fierce battle that lasted approximately 34 minutes. Despite a tough and intense match, Sami Zayn and Kevin Owens emerged victorious, dethroning the reigning champions and claiming the championship belts in the main event of the year’s biggest event.
#1. WrestleMania XL Night One to Feature Tag Team Championship Match as Main Event
Despite a 38-year hiatus since the last tag team matches headlined WrestleMania, WWE is reviving the tradition this year. In the event’s 39-year history, only two tag team matches have been featured as the main event.
The highly anticipated tag team match between The Rock and Roman Reigns is scheduled to take place during WWE WrestleMania XL on Saturday. Despite the event not yet taking place, this highly anticipated matchup is already being promoted as the main event for Night One.
The highly anticipated tag team match will feature The People’s Champion and The Tribal Chief facing off against Seth Rollins and Cody Rhodes. In an interesting twist, if The Bloodline emerges victorious, Cody’s upcoming match against Roman will be held under Bloodline Rules. Conversely, if The Visionary and The American Nightmare are able to secure a win, The Bloodline will be prohibited from accompanying The Tribal Chief to the ring for his match against Rhodes on Sunday.
