3 current tennis players whose fathers were defeated by Andre Agassi ft. Ben Shelton
With a career spanning approximately twenty years, Andre Agassi is widely considered one of the most legendary players to have ever graced the tennis court.
During his successful career, Andre Agassi, a flamboyant American athlete, achieved numerous milestones including winning eight Grand Slam titles, clinching an Olympic Gold medal, and holding the world No. 1 ranking for 101 weeks. He also made history by becoming the first man to achieve the career Golden Slam and the only player, regardless of gender, to win a career Super Slam which includes all four Grand Slams, Olympic gold, Davis Cup, and ATP Finals.
During his 1,144 matches on the ATP tour, he faced numerous opponents, including some whose sons are currently playing on the ATP Tour.
Here are 3 current tennis players who, interestingly, all have fathers who were defeated by Andre Agassi.
#1. Ben Smith
Bryan, the father of Ben Shelton, had a humble career as a player and had the opportunity to compete against Andre Agassi on two separate occasions.
At the 1992 Miami Open, Shelton emerged victorious with a 6-4, 6-4 win in the round of 64. However, Agassi turned the tables and avenged his defeat in the first round of the 1995 US Open with a dominant performance, winning 6-2, 6-2, 6-2. Despite his loss to Pete Sampras in the final, Agassi had a successful run in the tournament.
Despite his relatively modest playing career, Bryan Shelton achieved a career-high singles ranking of 55 and earned two ATP singles titles during his time on the court.
#2 Rising Star: Casper Ruud
Casper Ruud’s father, Christian Ruud, was also a professional tennis player for ten years from 1991 to 2001.
During his career, he faced off against Andre Agassi only once at the now-defunct AT&T Challenge in Atlanta in 1995, during the quarterfinals. Agassi won the match comfortably with a score of 6-4, 6-4, securing himself a spot in the semi-finals.
Despite being a prominent figure on the Challenger Tour, Christian’s career on the ATP Tour was rather modest compared to his son’s. His only ATP final appearance was at the 1995 Swedish Open in Bastad.
At the 1997 Australian Open, the Norwegian achieved his best Grand Slam result by reaching the fourth round. During his time on tour, Ruud held a career high ranking of 39 in the men’s singles and maintained a record of 115-145 W/L.
#4. Sebastian Repeat
Sebastian Korda’s father Petr Korda was an active player on the tour for approximately eighteen years from 1987 to 2005. He achieved great success, including winning the 1998 Australian Open and reaching the No. 2 spot in the men’s rankings.
During their time on tour, the Czech and Agassi faced each other eight times, with Agassi dominating their head-to-head record 7-1. The only time Korda managed to defeat the former World No. 1 was in the second round of the 1991 Canadian Open, where he ultimately advanced to the final.
Andre Agassi and Petr Korda faced off in three intense Grand Slam matches, with the most notable being the quarterfinals of the 1995 US Open. In this match, Agassi emerged victorious with a 6-4, 6-2, 1-6, 7-5 score.
In the quarterfinals of the Grand Slam Cup, Agassi was able to overcome a set deficit and triumph over his opponent with a score of 4-6, 6-0, 6-1.
