Removal of the 2K Launcher: What You Need to Know
In a significant move announced back in August, 2K and Firaxis have decided to eliminate the unpopular 2K Launcher from both existing and upcoming strategy games. This decision marks a positive change for gamers, as the launcher has now been removed from all 2K-published titles, including renowned franchises such as Civilization, XCOM, BioShock, and Mafia.
With the removal of the launcher, the folder that previously contained its installation will now only feature a simple 2kLauncherRemoved.txt
file, which can be deleted without consequence. However, for those who had the launcher installed in the past, there may still be residual files left on your system, located in two specific directories within the AppData folder.
Manually Removing Leftover Files
If you’ve used the 2K Launcher previously, it’s essential to manually delete the remaining files to ensure a clean system. Follow these steps:
- Launch your computer’s File Explorer.
- At the top of the window, select “View” and check the “Hidden items” box.
- Click on “This PC” , then open the C drive.
- Navigate to the “Users” folder and select your Windows profile username.
- Access the “AppData” folder.
- Locate and delete the “T2GP Launcher” folder inside the Local directory.
- Return to the “AppData” folder and delete the “T2GP Launcher” folder found in the Roaming directory.
To finalize the uninstallation, it is advisable to fully restart your Steam or Epic Games Store client. For thoroughness, 2K even suggests rebooting your entire system.
Impact on Gameplay
The removal of the 2K Launcher generally leads to a smoother user experience for most players. Popular titles like BioShock Remastered, BioShock 2 Remastered, BioShock Infinite, The Quarry, and Marvel’s Midnight Suns will now launch directly, eliminating the need for an additional login.
However, some titles are experiencing more significant changes. For example, XCOM 2 and Chimera Squad will now utilize dedicated mod launchers, enhancing modding capabilities, particularly on the Steam Deck. Conversely, Epic Games Store users should note that Civilization VI will require a special launch option to operate with DirectX 12.
