
The ‘2024 Overseas Korean Wave Survey (as of 2023)’ findings were revealed by the Ministry of Culture, Sports, and Tourism, in partnership with the Korea Foundation for International Cultural Exchange.
Lee Min-ho, the actor, has secured the top position in the actor category, solidifying his spot on the list for the 11th consecutive year since the start of the Korean Wave star survey. The remaining top 10 rankings have also remained unchanged.
Among all singers and groups, BTS and BLACKPINK have held the top two positions for six and five consecutive years respectively. Additionally, Jungkook and Lisa have also made impressive solo achievements, ranking 4th and 7th respectively due to their highly buzzed about activities last year.
For those unfamiliar, this survey thoroughly examines the popularity and appreciation of Korean Wave content in major global markets. An impressive 68.8% of participants indicated their enjoyment of Korean cultural content.
According to Naver, a popular Korean website, a recent survey revealed that countries in Southeast Asia, such as Indonesia, India, Thailand, the UAE, and Vietnam, have become popular destinations for Korean cultural content. The survey also looked into changes in interest towards this type of content, with 89.4% of participants reporting either an increase (45.9%) or similar level (43.5%) of interest.
It is worth mentioning that the survey also revealed a significant increase in popularity in countries such as Egypt, India, and Saudi Arabia.
2024 Korean Wave Survey: Top Movies, Dramas, and Artists Revealed in Complete Rankings
As K-pop remained the focal point according to the opinions of those surveyed, Korean cuisine, drama, IT products/brands, and beauty products were also included on the list, with preferences differing among different age groups.
One noteworthy finding from the survey was the favorable reception towards Korean dramas, with Squid Game being the most popular among international Hallyu fans, closely followed by The Glory and King the Land.
Surprisingly, ‘Squid Game’ gained widespread fame in Europe and the Americas, while ‘The Glory’ made its mark in the Asia-Pacific regions. Here are the highest-rated K-dramas:

Despite being in their fifth year, Parasite and Train to Busan have maintained their popularity among Korean films, solidifying their position as fan favorites.
In the 2024 Overseas Korean Wave survey, BTS maintained their position as the top singer/group for the sixth consecutive year with an impressive approval rating of 29.1%. Additionally, Jungkook was ranked fourth in the singer/group category with a respectable approval rating of 2.7%.
Even in the Asia/Pacific region, BTS was the top choice, with a mention rate of 31.1%.
In Europe and Africa, BTS achieved ratings of 46.4% and 38.5% respectively. In the Middle East, the group’s popularity continued to rise as they achieved a rating of 38.3%, showcasing their increasing impact in this region.

In the 2024 survey results, Jungkook achieved the fourth position. As a solo artist, the BTS member had an outstanding accomplishment by reaching the top spot on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. His overall response rate was 2.7%.
