2024 Free Agency: Super Bowl champions Chiefs face competition from 49ers, Dolphins for ex-Bengals standout Tyler Boyd
Tyler Boyd, a wide receiver with eight seasons of experience in the NFL, has had a successful career thus far. As he enters free agency, numerous teams have expressed interest in acquiring him.
The Athletic’s Mark Kaboly reports that the Kansas City Chiefs, Los Angeles Chargers, Miami Dolphins, Detroit Lions, and San Francisco 49ers have expressed interest.
The Bengals selected Boyd in the second round of the 2016 NFL draft and he has proven to be a reliable No. 2 or No. 3 wide receiver.
Boyd has accumulated 513 receptions, 6,000 receiving yards, and 31 touchdowns during his eight-year career in the NFL. With his free agency approaching this off-season, it appears highly probable that he will depart from Cincinnati due to the team’s decision to franchise tag Tee Higgins and their need to sign Ja’Marr Chase to a contract extension in the near future.
Predicting the Ideal Landing Spot for Tyler Boyd in the 2024 NFL Free Agency
Despite the breakdown of contract negotiations, the Pittsburgh Steelers still appear to be the ideal destination for Tyler Boyd.
Boyd, a native of Clariton, PA, has expressed his desire to conclude his career in his hometown. He attended college at Pittsburgh and has mentioned his aspiration to play for the Steelers.
As a member of the AFC North, the Bengals are considered rivals of the Steelers. This would give Boyd the advantage of being familiar with playing against divisional opponents. Additionally, he would have the benefit of having veteran quarterback Russell Wilson as his passer for the upcoming season.
Tyler Boyd’s Performance in the 2023 Season
Despite being a talented player, Tyler Boyd’s performance in the NFL last season was one of his least productive.
During his time with the Cincinnati Bengals, he participated in all 17 games, marking the most games he has played in a single season. He also started in 13 of those games.
Boyd’s 2019 season saw him make 67 catches on 98 targets. His average of 10.0 yards per catch was a career-low, resulting in a total of 667 yards. This marked the third-lowest yardage total in his career. He also recorded two receiving touchdowns, tying for the second-lowest amount in a single season.
Boyd’s only game last season where he had over 100 receiving yards was just one.
Despite experiencing a decline in performance last season, one contributing factor was the injury of Joe Burrow during the second half of the season.
