20 Years After Revenge of the Sith: Padmé Amidala Receives the Legacy She Deserves in Star Wars

Two decades after her tragic demise in Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith, Padmé Amidala‘s remarkable legacy is finally receiving the recognition it merits. The manner of her death has long been a point of contention among fans of the Star Wars prequel trilogy. Despite her unwavering bravery and dedication to public service throughout her life, Revenge of the Sith offers scant justification for her passing, attributing it largely to her lost will to live. Moreover, deleted scenes from the movie further stripped Padmé of an integral part of her legacy.

“What you’re doing,” Lud said, “is only proving him right. The Delegation of Two Thousand was. . . well, it was mad and foolish and an utter failure, but at least it was idealistic. It was built on principle, and people saw that even if they didn’t understand what the principle was. Now I know you’re acting in what you believe is the best interest of democracy. I know you, Mon. But—”

The recognition of the Delegation of 2000 as officially part of Star Wars canon serves to strengthen Padmé’s legacy significantly.

Revisiting Padmé’s Role in Revenge of the Sith

Complexities in Padmé’s Legacy

The omission of pivotal scenes in Revenge of the Sith led to the erasure of the Delegation of 2000 from canonical narratives; however, that has changed with the release of The Mask of Fear. This revitalization of the Delegation’s role not only reinstates Padmé’s contributions but also reframes the interpretation of their efforts.

Intriguingly, the depiction of the Delegation has become more nuanced, as described in The Mask of Fear. Their actions are now framed as both ambitious and ultimately misguided, with terms such as “mad,””foolish,”and “failure”surfacing in the narrative. This perspective sheds light on the reality that the delegation did not succeed in its goal of thwarting Palpatine, yet it underscores a vital aspect of Padmé’s character—a fierce dedication to justice and democratic principle, even in defeat.

My thoughts on Padmé’s demise and her enduring legacy are bittersweet. Throughout the prequel trilogy and Star Wars: The Clone Wars, Padmé demonstrated exceptional wisdom and courage, beginning her fight for her world at just 14 years old. Her tragic end often overshadows her status as one of the franchise’s most compelling characters.

The reintroduction of the Delegation of 2000 into the canon significantly alters the narrative surrounding Padmé. Regardless of the group’s ultimate failure, their story emphasizes Padmé’s unwavering bravery, insight, and commitment to justice until her final moments. While I will remain critical of how Padmé Amidala’s death was portrayed in Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith, I am thrilled to see her legacy through the lens of the Delegation of 2000 being honored in the Star Wars universe.
