1047 Games Confirms Splitgate 2 Re-Launch in 2026 Following Major Game Overhaul, Layoffs, and Shutdown of Original Splitgate Servers

The Future of Splitgate: A Comprehensive Overhaul Ahead

1047 Games, the development team renowned for creating Splitgate and its sequel, Splitgate 2, recently made headlines after co-founder Ian Proulx boldly stated at the Summer Game Fest 2025 that the new installment aims to “make FPS great again.” Despite this optimistic outlook, the studio later acknowledged that they had prematurely launched Splitgate 2, prompting plans for significant redevelopment before its anticipated re-launch in early 2026.

Officially released on June 6, 2025, across platforms including PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S, Splitgate 2 will remain accessible for now and will receive an upcoming Chapter 3 update. However, the studio has indicated they are reverting the game to a beta state, effectively “unlaunching”it.

Understanding the Decision

In a detailed statement shared on their website and official social media channels, Proulx and his co-founder, Nicholas Bagamian, expressed their acknowledgment of player feedback, stating: “We launched too early. Our ambitious goals led us to release a version of the game that was not polished enough, and we made several errors in the process.”

Changes on the Horizon

The announcement was further complicated by news of further staff reductions, with reports indicating that 45 members of the team will be laid off. To ease the repercussions of these job cuts, the original Splitgate servers are scheduled to shut down next month.

While the studio expressed a desire to keep these servers operational, they noted the financial burden it represents: “It has cost us hundreds of thousands of dollars over the past couple of years, and we must prioritize our team.”However, they are exploring options for an offline mode or peer-to-peer matchmaking to allow loyal fans to continue enjoying the original game.

Looking ahead, 1047 Games promises that the rebuilt Splitgate 2 will deliver the unique experience players loved from the first game. They remain committed to rectifying past mistakes, saying, “We’ve learned a lot and are determined to make Splitgate as great as possible.”The studio emphasizes its deep connection to the game and its community, ensuring that abandoning it is not an option.

What Comes Next?

Given 1047 Games’ confident launch earlier this year, the studio’s recent challenges and regrets come as no surprise to many players. As they work towards a relaunch, there are still pressing questions about the specifics of the changes, the game’s availability during this period, and how it will be branded—will we see Splitgate 2 – Open Beta on consoles and PC, for instance?

With the original game undergoing its server decommissioning, it remains to be seen if players will still be eager to embrace Splitgate 2 when it re-emerges in 2026. The path to recovery will require not only rebuilding the game but also rebuilding trust within the community. Whether they can indeed fulfill their promise to “make FPS great again”remains an open question.
