For $14.99 per month, you can unlock the “Extra” tier, which provides all of the above, as well as access to the full catalog of PS4 and PS5 games. You’ll also get a Ubisoft+ Classics subscription to access even more games. The Sony games catalog is regularly updated with new games and removes old ones every month.

Finally, $17.99 per month unlocks the Premium tier for access to game trials for new releases, a catalog of classics including PS1, PS2 and PSP games that work natively, as well as select PS3 games that work in the cloud . All tiers offer a one-week trial before billing, and all offer discounted subscriptions for 3-month and 12-month blocks.

User-updatable storage

While Xbox series consoles must use Microsoft’s proprietary expansion cards to increase internal storage, the Sony PlayStation 5 has a user-upgradeable M.2 slot with which you can increase your PS5’s fast storage with a secondary NVMe drive. These are the same types of drives commonly found in PCs, which means you can shop for the best deals and save money.

There are some things to consider when choosing a disc to use with the PS5. These are outlined on Sony’s support page, and include matching a smaller form factor, making sure the drive’s capacity doesn’t exceed 4TB, and making sure your drive has (or can be equipped with) a heatsink that isn’t too thick.

If you don’t know where to start, we’ve rounded up some of the best NVMe drives to use with PS5.

3D audio

Sony made a big song and dance about its 3D audio technology before the PS5 was released and even went so far as to release a matching pair of stereo speakers to score a point. Instead of using existing audio technologies such as Dolby Atmos, Sony has developed its own solution that should work with a wider range of devices.

3D audio works best when using headphones, which can simply be plugged directly into the DualSense controller. You don’t even need fancy Sony headphones for this, one of our best third-party PS5 headsets will do just fine. Go to Settings > Sound > Headphone 3D Audio to turn the setting on or off.

You can also enable 3D audio on your TV or an existing surround sound setup under Settings > Sound.

Remote playback

Remote Play lets you stream what’s playing on your PS5 to another device, including Windows and Mac computers, Android smartphones, iPhones, or even PS4s. You can enable this in Settings > System > Remote Play on PS5. You should also turn on “Stay Connected to the Internet” and “Enable PS5 to turn on from the network” in Settings > System > Power Saving > Features Available in Rest Mode.

Visit the Sony PS5 Remote Play website to download related apps for streaming on your computer or mobile device. On PS4, you need to download the latest system software and use the PS5 Remote Play app.

Remote Play works locally and over the Internet using your PlayStation account to link consoles to your device. This should work better when connected to a LAN using wired ethernet. Slow network speeds can result in latency, interruptions, and visual artifacts as the network struggles to transfer the required data.

Capture screenshots and videos

Sony first introduced the Share button on the PS4, and PS5 has further enhanced the feature with the Create button. This button is located to the left of the touchpad and allows you to quickly access the “Create” quick menu, take screenshots, and record gameplay videos.

Default mapping lets you trigger the Create button with a single tap, take a screenshot by pressing and holding the button, or record a game clip by double-tapping the button. The media you capture is displayed in the Media Gallery app available from the home screen.

You can change these controls, preferred media formats, clip duration, and turn on auto-download in Settings > Captures & Broadcasts. When enabled, Auto-Upload will upload files to the Sony cloud, making your shots available through the PlayStation app for iPhone and Android .

Find out how many hours you have spent in the game

Platforms like Steam and the Nintendo Switch make it easy to see how much time you’ve spent playing (Microsoft, take note), and the PS5 is no exception. If you want to know how many hours of your life you’ve devoted to a particular game, select your avatar from the main menu, then go to Profile > Games to see how much time you’ve spent playing games from your library.

Use game presets to set difficulty and more

Game presets are a handy feature that Sony has added to the PS5 so you don’t have to change the same old settings over and over again in supported games. Go to Settings > Saved Data > Game/App Settings > Game Presets to set general preferences so you don’t have to change them in each title individually.

You can choose between the performance and quality of graphics modes, game difficulty, camera movement settings, and invert default camera controls. While you’re there, you can turn on spoiler alerts (also in the game/app settings) that will hide certain screenshots in the PS5 interface that can ruin certain aspects of the game for you.

Launch downloads and control your PS5 remotely

Use the PlayStation app for Android and iPhone to control your console remotely. This includes downloading games and add-ons remotely, purchasing new games, viewing notifications on your console, chatting with friends (and seeing who’s online), managing your console’s storage, and using quick login and remote game launch to start a game session. .

You can also sign in to your PlayStation account at PlayStation.com to purchase games and initiate remote downloads of games you already have on your linked console.

Set up Control Center

The PS5 control center appears when you press the PS button once. It acts like a quick menu with some useful shortcuts and power options. You can tweak it to make it more useful by pressing the PS button on your controller and then selecting Options. Select an icon, then move it to the left or right, or press down to hide it from the menu entirely.

In the same way, you will turn off the console (or put it to sleep), which previously required pressing and holding the PS button on the PS4.

Play games with Share Play

Share Play is a PlayStation Plus feature that lets you play games with a friend as if they were sitting next to you. This works in two ways: either you share a local multiplayer “co-op” mode with a friend over the internet, or you let them play as if they were you. This will allow your friends to try out your games before they buy them.

This feature requires a basic PlayStation Plus subscription, with both parties requiring at least an Essential subscription. Sony recommends a connection of at least 2Mbps (upstream and downstream) for this to work, although the faster your internet connection, the better the experience should be.

Each Share Play session lasts 60 minutes, although you can repeat sessions as many times as you like, and the feature works on both PS4 and PS5. Activate Share Play by pressing the PS button on your controller, then go to Game Base and select the friend you want to play with. Start a voice chat with them using the appropriate button, then click the “Start Co-Play” button to get started.

From here, you can simply share your screen, let a visitor play for you, or play together in co-op co-op. One interesting use of this mode is to get help with a particularly difficult part of the game, or to show someone an Easter egg or something they may have missed.

Do more with your PS5

If you’re still thinking about buying a PS5 , we recommend opting for the more expensive optical drive version to give you more choice when buying games.

If you already have a console, you might be surprised to know that you can connect a keyboard and mouse to use some games, use your old PS4 controllers to play the latest generation of games, or even connect a DualSense controller to an Apple TV or iPhone and iPad for mobile games.
