Western and Eastern narratives diverge significantly in their storytelling approach, with Western tales primarily centered around plot progression, while Eastern narratives often focus on character development. To create compelling storytelling from a character-centric perspective, it is crucial to introduce an engaging ensemble that resonates with players.
This is exemplified in many JRPGs, where we encounter memorable characters that, despite often being teenagers wielding the power to vanquish deities while juggling schoolwork, feel incredibly relatable. Yet, the dynamics of JRPGs extend beyond permanent companions; many titles introduce temporary characters who join the party briefly, leaving an indelible mark on the player’s experience.
In this article, we will explore ten temporary JRPG allies whose absence is deeply felt, often due to plot constraints or tragic circumstances. Proceed with caution, as spoilers for these beloved games will be included.
An honorable mention goes to Aerith.
10. Minwu
Final Fantasy II

Many might argue in favor of Ricard due to my fondness for Dragoons, but Minwu excels in Final Fantasy II as the standout guest party member. As the first White Mage to join, Minwu significantly outshines the main characters with superior stats and access to high-level White Magic. His departure is necessitated by the plot, yet his presence would have significantly eased the struggles of the main party during their self-imposed trials.
9. Rock
Xenoblade Chronicles 3

Despite the stellar cast in the Xenoblade Chronicles series, I found a unique case in Mwamba. While not a candidate for a permanent member due to his quickly forgotten role in a lengthy game, Mwamba possesses a unique non-learnable class of Sharpshooter with interesting abilities. His distinct skill set could have offered additional depth, making his permanent inclusion appealing to completionists eager for full character exploration.
8. Alisha
Tales of Zestiria

While Tales of Zestiria has its share of shortcomings, Alisha stands out as a well-crafted character.Initially, I was led to believe she’d be a permanent fixture in the party, given her appealing nature and spear-wielding skills. From a gameplay perspective, her absence is understandable, as the combination of Sorey, Rose, and a third party member would complicate combat. However, Alisha’s perspective would have enriched the narrative by introducing a balanced human viewpoint between Sorey’s idealism and Rose’s chaotic nature.
7. Grief
Metaphor: ReFantasy

Metaphor: ReFantazio cleverly misleads players regarding character permanence, with Grius serving as the tutorial representative, only to exit the party later. This manipulation shapes my desire for Grius to remain, as I can envision his character contributing a mature perspective and humorous camaraderie alongside Heismay, perhaps sharing anecdotes over drinks amidst their journey.
6. Jowy Atreides
Suikoden II

While I won’t reveal spoilers about Suikoden II, Jowy’s status as a temporary character hints at the unfolding drama. His journey significantly shapes Riou’s character, highlighting the intricately woven narrative connections. Jowy’s development, carefully paralleled with Riou, firmly cements Suikoden II’s reputation as one of the finest JRPGs, which intensifies the player’s emotional investment in their relationship and the game’s true ending.
5. Shinjiro Aragaki
Persona 3

In Persona 3, players are well aware of the game’s pervasive theme surrounding death, with Shinjiro’s fate serving as a poignant example.Even with foreshadowing, many players, myself included, might have anticipated Akihiko as the casualty instead. Shinjiro’s demise serves as a narrative catalyst for the development of Ken and Akihiko, exemplifying the game’s emotional depth, yet it is a disappointment considering his potential as a formidable physical combatant.
4. Sue
Grandeur

In Grandia, Sue’s youthful exuberance serves as a counterbalance to the more serious themes of the adventure. Ultimately, however, she ends up taking a backseat, highlighting the cruel reality that an eight-year-old shouldn’t endure the trials of an adventure. Her eventual departure, resulting from emotional and physical strains, profoundly affects the party’s dynamics and elevates the poignancy of the game’s conclusion, enhancing the overall narrative experience.
3. Beatrix
Final Fantasy IX

While some players may overlook Steiner’s charm, the prospect of substituting him with Beatrix is a compelling one.Beatrix not only matches Steiner’s combat abilities but surpasses him in every aspect, portraying a well-rounded character capable of dealing damage and providing support. Her presence would undoubtedly add complexity to the narrative, elevating the overall dynamic of the party with her strong personality and storied background.
2. Teepo
Breath of Fire III

Teepo, a character introduced early in Breath of Fire III, serves as a pivotal connection between his companions.Though he departs due to plot developments, his magical abilities as a young wizard could have offered a unique dynamic if he had remained in the party. Although various story elements led to his absence, many fans envisioned an alternative narrative exploring his growth and potential transformation as a Dragon Lord.
1. Harley
Chrono Cross

Harle, with her sarcastic charm and intriguing backstory, embodies the complexity often found in JRPG characters. In standard gameplay, she serves only as a temporary companion within the Temporal Vortex, which is disheartening given her unique personality and character development. Her poignant narrative stands out, and players might wish to preserve her fate, reinforcing her as a beloved character within the diverse roster of Chrono Cross despite the overwhelming number of characters available.
