The term “sidekick” may seem outdated, as it can inadvertently downplay the significant roles that friends and partners contribute to various efforts. While protagonists often take center stage—especially in video games—there always exists a supporting character who plays a crucial role, even if indirectly.
Interestingly, many sidekicks are relegated to their status by circumstance rather than lack of ability. In different scenarios, these characters could easily take on the role of hero—or even villain—under the right circumstances. What’s more compelling is that, faced with challenges, these sidekicks can often rise to the occasion, stepping seamlessly into the protagonist’s shoes when needed.
