Striking a balance in the power scaling of a narrative can pose considerable challenges, particularly in interactive environments like video games. To maintain player engagement, developers often introduce mechanisms that temporarily diminish a character’s abilities.
These de-powering moments can occur unexpectedly and in various contexts: players may find themselves stripped of their skills midway through the storyline, or face a deliberate reset of their gear at the start of a sequel. The motivations behind such reductions can deeply influence the storyline, ranging from dire circumstances to accidental events or the passage of time itself.
