Throughout our lives, we encounter a multitude of video games, ranging from the captivating to the lackluster. Yet, some titles transcend the ordinary, offering experiences that are truly one-of-a-kind and etched in the collective memory of gamers.
Certain games emerge as genre-defining benchmarks, subtly setting standards that others strive to meet but often fall short of achieving. Whether due to groundbreaking mechanics, innovative storytelling, or unparalleled gameplay, these titles become the touchstones by which all similar games are measured.

10 Guitar Hero 3: Legends Of Rock
Rhythm Game Genre
During the mid-2000s, when rhythm games boomed with plastic instruments, Guitar Hero 3: Legends of Rock truly dominated the scene. Loaded with iconic classic rock and heavy metal anthems, it set a lofty bar that subsequent entries in the franchise struggled to reach.
No other installment in the series has managed to replicate the sheer exhilaration that filled me upon completing Career Mode and tackling DragonForce’s challenging “Through The Fire And Flames.”It’s a shame that the Guitar Hero franchise has faded into the background. However, with hope on the horizon thanks to the Fortnite Festival and former developers possibly reviving the series, perhaps we can anticipate a worthy comeback.
9 BioShock
Single-player FPS
BioShock seamlessly blends genres, functioning as both a first-person shooter and a role-playing game. Its roots can be traced to the esteemed System Shock series, earning its title as a spiritual successor while incorporating immersive sim elements.
This title engages players with its compelling and multifaceted narrative, forcing them to confront difficult moral dilemmas involving the Little Sisters and the fate of Rapture. The integration of player choice into gameplay transforms standard FPS mechanics by merging them with extraordinary powers, resulting in a rich tapestry of interaction.
If you haven’t yet experienced BioShock, I strongly encourage you to do so—it’s an unforgettable venture that continues to influence the genre, with hopes for future explorations like Judas.
8 Ring of Fire
Soulslike (And Open World) Genre
Venturing into the realm of soulslike games, many adhere to a familiar pattern. However, Elden Ring distinguished itself by daring to innovate, leading to its tremendous success.
By fusing the intricate difficulty of the soulslike genre with expansive open-world elements, it offered gamers both a fresh experience and the allure of traditional gameplay. This blend makes Elden Ring a must-try that may inspire lots of imitations, but will likely remain unmatched.
7 Heavy Rain
Interactive Drama Genre
Prior to experiencing Heavy Rain, I had little exposure to interactive dramas. However, after engaging with this title, I found it to be the pinnacle of the genre.
Its immersive narrative—centered around unraveling the mystery of the Origami Killer—allowed me to shape the destinies of four distinct characters, intertwining their story arcs in compelling ways.
This game not only rekindled my interest in quick-time events but also introduced me to a gaming style I initially approached with skepticism. I am grateful to Heavy Rain for broadening my gaming horizons.
6 Resident Evil 2 Remake
Survival Horror Genre
Resident Evil 2 originally defined the survival horror genre during its late ’90s debut. Thus, it was remarkable that in 2019, Capcom decided to create a remake that reinvigorated the title’s legacy.
From the opening moments, the feeling of dread while battling against relentless hordes of zombies is unyielding, intensified by scarce resources and the haunting presence of Mr. X—an antagonist that epitomizes terror.
While many recent titles have excelled, Resident Evil 2 Remake remains the quintessential survival horror experience that sets the benchmark for future games.
5 Super Smash Bros. Melee
Fighting Game Genre
All iterations of Super Smash Bros. contribute to the franchise, but Melee holds a special place in my heart. It serves as a constant point of comparison for all other fighting games.
The game expertly balances casual enjoyment with competitive depth, featuring a robust roster of characters and an array of play modes that ensure the experience stays fresh and engaging.
Perhaps it’s nostalgia, but I believe Super Smash Bros. Melee stands as a milestone in the fighting genre, elevating platform fighters to new heights. Its legacy still shines through as it’s regularly featured in competitive tournaments today.
4 The Last Of Us
Action Game Genre
What remains to be said about The Last Of Us that hasn’t already been dissected? Like countless others, I was drawn into the tragic journey of Joel and Ellie through a world ravaged by infection and violence, remaining invested through every remaster and adaptation.
The gameplay masterfully intertwines survival horror elements with action mechanics, empowering players to explore every nook and cranny in pursuit of new weaponry and secrets.
No matter how many times I replay The Last Of Us, the enthralling experience continues to resonate, setting a high bar for action games yet to come.
3 The Legend Of Zelda: Breath Of The Wild
Adventure Game Genre
When The Legend of Zelda: Breath Of The Wild was introduced, I never anticipated that it would successfully recapture the freedom and adventurous spirit that made the original game in 1986 so iconic. Yet, it stands as a pinnacle of excellence.
With its open-world format, players are granted unprecedented freedom to explore and engage in the game in any sequence they desire. This liberty, combined with a combat system that is both challenging and fulfilling, ensures that surprises await at every corner.
I still find myself uncovering hidden secrets within Breath Of The Wild, showcasing Nintendo’s impressive design that invites exploration and adventure.
2 Mario Kart 8
Racing Game Genre
For the longest time, Mario Kart 8 served as my favorite comfort game, consistently enhanced by Nintendo with fresh updates and content additions. However, it is the gameplay experience itself that continues to draw me back.
No other title in the franchise—or even competing racers—can rival the precise balance of slick racing mechanics and playful chaos that defines Mario Kart 8. With memorable tracks and a roster packed with beloved characters, online matches are quick and seamless.
It’s no wonder that Nintendo has sustained this game’s popularity for nearly ten years. Without a doubt, it ranks among the top racing games ever created.
1 Super Mario Galaxy
3D Platformer Genre
In the expansive world of Mario games, countless titles could be highlights in a discussion about genre-defining experiences. Yet, my personal favorite remains Super Mario Galaxy, a true masterpiece on the Wii.
The game excels in so many areas: brilliant level design, enjoyable boss encounters, unparalleled replayability, and the introduction of Rosalina—who quickly became my favorite Mario character. I have devoted countless hours to collecting all the stars, and I’d eagerly embark on that quest again.
While Mario continues to explore new realms, nothing can ever surpass the awe of his original journey into space.
