iOS 26 Update: What You Need to Know Before Installing
Apple has introduced iOS 26, updated its operating system branding from the anticipated iOS 19 to align with the latest versions for its entire lineup, including iPads, Apple Watches, and Macs. If you were part of the beta testing group or are currently on iOS 18, now is the moment to transition to the stable release of iOS 26. However, prepare adequately before diving into the installation process.
1. Confirm Device Compatibility
Before you get too excited about downloading the latest version, you must check whether your iPhone model is compatible with iOS 26. Apple has released new models, including the iPhone Air and the advanced iPhone 17 Series, the latter priced at $2, 000. Consult Apple’s compatibility list for your specific model.
2. Perform a Backup
Even though the iPhone update process has matured over the years, unexpected issues can still occur. It’s wise to back up your device manually, even if you have automatic iCloud backups configured. Navigate to Settings > iCloud > iCloud Backup, then tap “Back Up Now“.Ensure you have sufficient iCloud storage before proceeding; alternatively, consider backing up directly to your Mac.
Keep in mind that photos and videos in your Photos app won’t be included in your backup file if iCloud Photos is enabled. Manage your iCloud settings by going to Settings > [Your Name] > iCloud > Photos and ensure the “Sync this iPhone“option is activated for complete backup coverage.
3. Back Up Essential Third-Party Apps
Remember that apps like WhatsApp and Telegram do not automatically save chat histories in your iPhone’s backup. WhatsApp has its own backup option saved in iCloud. Always verify the latest backup status of your chats prior to updating, particularly if your backup schedule is infrequent. Repeat this backup check for any other apps that operate outside of iCloud synchronization.
4. Update Your Applications
To maximize functionality and compatibility post-update, ensure all your apps are current. If you haven’t enabled automatic updates, check the App Store for manual updates. Developers often release updates that fix bugs or improve performance alongside new iOS versions.
5. Secure Your Login Credentials
With numerous apps requiring login information, having a secure and accessible repository for your usernames and passwords is essential. Before commencing the update, ensure that your credentials are safeguarded in either Apple’s Passwords app or another trusted password manager, preventing potential headaches if issues arise during the installation.
6. Free Up Storage Space
To install iOS 26 smoothly, your iPhone should have adequate free storage—ideally around 20-25GB, as the update’s package size is approximately 7.8GB. If space is tight, consider syncing photos to iCloud and deleting unnecessary videos or large files.
7. Ensure Sufficient Battery Life
A stable installation requires your device to have sufficient battery power. An iPhone that shuts down mid-update risks bricking or losing data. Therefore, it’s advisable to have at least 50% battery life before initiating the update process.
8. Stable Internet Connection is Key
Given the substantial size of the iOS 26 update, a stable Wi-Fi connection is essential to prevent interrupted downloads or unforeseen charges from cellular data usage. When updating, check to ensure other devices on your network aren’t engaging in bandwidth-heavy activities.
9. Take Your Time
Upon launch, new software versions can have unforeseen issues. It can be beneficial to delay updates for a few days, allowing for initial user feedback on stability. Past updates have led to problems like iMessage bugs or other performance glitches shortly after release, so caution is warranted.
10. Choose Your Update Method
Updating to iOS 26 can be done through various means. For those short on time, automatic updates can be set up via Settings > General > Software Update > Automatic Updates. Enabling both “Automatically Install”and “Automatically Download”will allow your device to download updates while charging overnight and connected to Wi-Fi.
Alternatively, you may choose the traditional method and update your iPhone by connecting it to a Mac. Locate your device in the Finder sidebar and manually initiate the update process.
The iOS 26 update introduces an array of features such as a revamped Photos app, enhancements in Safari, and HDR screenshots. It also incorporates Apple’s new Liquid Glass design language across its ecosystems for a coherent appearance. While the design changes initially met with skepticism, subsequent modifications were made to reflect user feedback.
