A Spiritual Successor To Dark Cloud
This visually stunning sequel, inspired by Studio Ghibli, thrusts players into an unexpected scenario when President Roland awakens in a fantastical realm after a catastrophic event. He soon meets Prince Evan of Ding Dong Dell, who faces an assassination plot amid a coup. Prince Evan is determined to create a kingdom where happiness flourishes.
Unlike its predecessor, which took time to unfold, this game engages players instantly by shifting the focus from familiars to active combat. As a noteworthy homage to one of my all-time favorites, Dark Cloud, its captivating narrative and gameplay lured me in immediately, leaving me eagerly awaiting each subsequent download on my PS4.
9 NieR: Automata
A Yoko Taro Masterpiece
Upon starting NieR: Automata, I was immediately immersed in a world where you play as 2B on a mission against a mechanized humanity crisis. From the onset, you’re fighting waves of robotic foes alongside fellow android 9S, culminating in an epic showdown with a titan of a machine. This sets the stage for a thought-provoking journey infused with a profound narrative about war and identity.
The game’s remarkable soundtrack complements this gripping experience and, much like its predecessors, weaves intricate connections across Yoko Taro’s work. If you haven’t yet embarked on this journey, it’s time to dive in.
8 Kingdom Hearts
A Magical Crossover
Initially, the concept of a Final Fantasy and Disney collaboration seemed simplistic. As someone who wasn’t fond of the musical elements of Disney films, I skeptically received it as a birthday gift—only to find it evolving into one of my cherished franchises. The opening scene features a mesmerizing performance of one of Utada Hikaru’s best songs, transporting players into a dreamlike world where iconic characters guide them through engaging tutorials.
This initial phase cleverly shapes the player’s journey, influencing leveling and statistics while laying a foundation that invites further exploration.
7 Yakuza 0
Mystery And Silliness Perfected
To genuinely experience the Like a Dragon series, Yakuza 0 serves as the perfect entry point. It transports players to the vibrant atmosphere of 1980s Kamurocho, where Kiryu’s relatively ordinary evening is interrupted by side-splitting quests, culminating in a gripping murder mystery when he becomes a suspect in a crime he didn’t commit.
This blend of humor and intrigue made an immediate impact, solidifying my affection for the title as I navigated its compelling narrative.
6 Ghost of Tsushima
A Beautiful Start To Revenge
Ghost of Tsushima immediately immerses players in a high-stakes clash with the Mongol army, only for Jin Sakai to witness the loss of his comrades. Rescued by Yuna, he learns of the Mongols’ domination over the island and sets out on a quest for vengeance. The striking visuals and homage to Akira Kurosawa drew me in deeply; I never anticipated becoming so invested in this story from its stunning introduction.
5 Life Is Strange
Rewinding Time To Save Lives
Life is Strange opens with a terrifying twist: after a nightmare, protagonist Max Caulfield unwittingly prevents a shooting, introducing players to a unique “choose your path”mechanic that centers around time manipulation. Set against the picturesque backdrop of Arcadia Bay, the game blends captivating storytelling with an engaging mystery.
Framed by the haunting melody of Syd Matter’s To All of You, the emotional depth of this first installment stands unmatched in the franchise.
4 Final Fantasy X
The Coolest Entrance Ever
While Final Fantasy VII swiftly immerses players in action, Final Fantasy X invites curiosity and mystery from the outset. Amidst the melancholic atmosphere of Zanarkand, chaos ensues as the powerful track Otherworld plays, accompanied by Auron’s unforgettable introduction, embodying a blend of courage and curiosity.
My experience was especially profound as a player first acquainted with Kingdom Hearts, primarily due to the turn-based battle system and the enigmatic allure of the world presented.

The Hype Is Deserved
The whispers surrounding Clair Obscur quickly convinced me to explore this game, which unfolds as Gustave gathers flowers for his lost love on a day of poignant significance. Set in Lumière, a hauntingly beautiful alternative Paris, players grapple with the sudden disappearance of beloved characters and seek to uncover the truth behind yearly expeditions. Gustave’s journey transforms him into a reluctant hero, and I was led through mesmerizing narratives and sounds, unsure of what revelations awaited. To my surprise, this title became a personal favorite within the year.

A Return To Survival Horror
While iconic openings from the original Resident Evil and Resident Evil 4 are celebrated, Resident Evil 7 holds a special place in my heart. The atmosphere builds gradually as players navigate the eerie Guest House, foreshadowing thrilling encounters that are both terrifying and unforgettable. The nostalgia of the demo experience adds depth, as players witness a shocking twist when Max’s wife unexpectedly attacks, leading to harrowing scenes of survival.
This masterful revival of survival horror focuses on mood over action, making the first-person perspective a delightful shock as players immerse themselves back into the horrors of Raccoon City.

Death Stranding Isn’t This Violent
While many remember the iconic openings of earlier Metal Gear Solid games, the entry to Metal Gear Solid V takes the crown for me. Its gripping narrative begins with an intense yet slow reveal that deeply invests players into Venom Snake’s odyssey of vengeance. Awakening to a haunting rendition of David Bowie’s The Man Who Sold the World, you are swiftly thrust into chaos, forcing players to adapt and strategize after waking from a nine-year coma.
Witnessing Venom Snake’s transformation from vulnerability to strength enhances the overall experience, with cinematic sequences that linger in my memory long after the final credits rolled.
